SMILE 1983 HONG KONG COO/No COO
Above you can see following variants (left to right):
- Green painted face w/cream fluffy skirt
- Green painted face w/grey-brown flat skirt
Smile’s Klaatu figure was released on 65, 77 and 79 back Kenner cards. This was also the figure packaged in the UK on Palitoy cards. Production of Smile’s Klaatu figure moved from Hong Kong to Macau for the later versions.
For Klaatu’s head, Smile opted to shoot the plastic in silver and paint the face a mid-green shade. Read more about Klaatu’s variations in Wolff’s Mould/Colour Variants Guide. There aren’t any other mould variations to note and the colours in paint and plastic were consistent between the initial HK COO and the later no COO versions.
The first 65a release was packaged briefly with a fluffy skirt before the direction to alter the material to a flatter, and more durable fabric. This “flatter” skirt material continued on and throughout the later No COO era.
ACCESSORY: Vibro staff with a small EPM. Cream fluffy skirt (HK). Grey-brown flat skirt (No COO)

Unitoy’s Klaatu figure was released on 65 and 77 back Kenner cards.
Unitoy chose to shoot the head plastic in a blue-green and paint the helmet in silver. Read more about Klaatu’s variations in Wolff’s Mould/Colour Variants Guide. There are minor plastic colour variations in the shade of blue-green and the browns on Klaatu’s vest. Unitoy produced the limbs in both a tan or mid grey colour. Mixed colour combinations are commonly found on individual figures.
The initial 65bk releases came with a fluffy skirt, which was changed after a few releases to a flatter version.
ACCESSORY: Vibro staff with a small EPM. Cream fluffy skirt or grey-brown flat skirt.
LILI LEDY 1983 No COO

Lili Ledy Klaatu figure was a Retorno release on the 14bk, Regreso release on the 50bk and later is seen on the Kenner 65 back “Made in Mexico” (MIM) card.
Lili Ledy, as with nearly all the other MIM releases produced their Klaatu tooling in-house, which bore a slightly different COO to the Hong Kong/Macau versions. There aren’t any mould variations to note between the LL and the Kenner released figures.
There are some minor paint colour variations in the shade of green on Klaatu’s face and the browns on his shoulders and torso.
The initial Retorno releases came with a fluffy skirt, while the latter versions for the MIM cards were accessorized with the flatter version of the skirt. The fabric belts originally had a paint or vinyl layer with a fabric backing which over the years turned brittle and delaminated, exposing the fabric backing.

Mainly four different skirts can be found on Klaatu. The materials differ on the skirt itself as well as on the sewn-on belt.
On the left we have two version of the “fluffy” skirt. One comes with a leathery belt and the other one has a simple fabric sewn on. Both of these should be the earlier versions, because none of them can be found on MIM cards. In general most MIM cards contain LL Klaatus combined with Kenner skirts.
Next up are the two versions with the “flat fur”. These can be also found with a fabric sewn on or with kind of leathery material “added”. This “material” is often very tacky and seems to shrink in time. I really could bet that the belt on my example was once completely covered with that tacky stuff and now you can see the fabric through at some points. Interestingly exactly this version can be found on some PBP and some MIM cards, but is at the same time the most rare skirt variant. It’s extremely hard to find one with that leathery tacky stuff still on. That’s why we could assume that the other version is just a damaged version where the leathery layer has totally gone. In my case the two examples are also very different in color regarding the flat fur skirt itself what makes it difficult to say for sure if they were once the same or if LL really produced those with and without leathery layer.
It can be noted that there is also fluffy skirts (version 2) with that kind of leathery belt known. It’s all very confusing, but I think future investigations will show if there is five, four or only three versions existing.
